ASME Codes used in Piping Design

In piping design several International Codes and Standards are used. Which codes and standards to be referred for a given projects depends on client preferences and local regulations. Design of piping systems complying with these codes, standards, or recommended practices ensures safety along with standardization of required items. Codes and Standards establish a commonality in engineering criteria, terms, principles, practices, materials, processes, etc. It help user establish a standard way of working and ensure built in safety, reliability and continuity. Piping codes and standards minimize mismatches and promote interchangeability. They economize the system, reduce inventory and ensure readily available backup from market.

These are the below mention codes and standard which have to follow every epic company to design, construction and installation of projects. These codes and standard are:

ASME 31 code for pressure piping

  • ASME B31.1 – Power piping.

  • ASME B31.2 – Fuel Gas Piping.

  • ASME B31.3 – Process piping.

  • ASME B31.4 – Pipeline Transportation system for liquid hydrocarbon & other liquid.

  • ASME B31.5 – Refrigeration Piping.

  • ASME B31.8 – Gas transmission & distribution piping system.

  • ASME B31.9 – Building services piping.

  • ASME B31.11 – Slurry transportation piping system.

ASME standard used for piping component


  • ASME B16.1 : Cast iron pipes flanges & flanged fittings.

  • ASME B16.5 : Carbon steel pipes flanges & flanged fittings. (Up to 24”)

  • ASME B16.47 : Large Diameter steel flanges. (Above 24”)

Butt welded fittings

  • ASME B16.9 : Steel butt welding fittings.

  • ASME B16.28 : Butt-welded short radius elbows & returns bends.


  • ASME B16.20 / API -601: Metallic gaskets for pipe flanges- Spiral wound, Octagonal ring Joint & Jacketed flanges.

  • ASME B16.21 : Non metallic gasket.

Socket & Threaded fittings

  • ASME B16.11 : Forged steel socket welding & threaded fittings.


  • ASME B16.10 : Face to face & end to end dimension of valves.

  • ASME B16.34 : Flanged & butt-welded ends steel valves (Pressure &Temperature ratings) except Ball, Plug & Butter fly Valves.


  • ASME B36.10 : Welded & Seamless wrought iron pipes.

  • ASME B36.19 : Stainless steel pipes.

ASME B31.3 – Process piping

This code prescribes requirements for the materials, design, fabrication, assembly, erection, examination, inspection, and testing of piping within the property limits of facilities engaged in the processing or handling of chemical petroleum or related products. The requirements of ASME B31.3 apply for all fluids, including raw, intermediate and finished chemical, petroleum products, gas, steam, air and water.

In case of packaged equipment, the interconnection piping with the exception of refrigeration piping shall be in compliance with the requirement of ASME B313.3. The refrigeration piping may conform to either ASME B31.3 or ASME B31.5.

The requirement of ASME B31.3 do not apply to piping system designed for internal gauge pressure at or above 0 but less than 15 psig provided the fluid handled is non-flammable, nontoxic and not damaging to human tissue and design temperatures from -29 deg C through 180 deg C.

The following piping and equipment are not required to comply with the requirements of ASME B31.3

  • Power boiler and the boiler external piping

  • Piping covered by ASME B31.8, B31.8 and B31.11

  • Piping covered by applicable governmental regulations

  • Piping for fire protection systems

  • Plumbing, sanitary sewers and storms sewers

  • Tubes, tubes headers, crossovers and manifolds of fired headers
